Airborne 01.21.21: Velocity V-Twins, Heli-Expo Cancelled, Ligado Debacle

Also: Space Florida, Datalink ADS-B, American Rocketry Challenge, 25-Hour Voice/Data Recorders

An ANN visit to Velocity Aircraft this week was an eye opener... one of the few true survivors of the once-bustling sportplane kit  industry, Velocity’s decades of experience and a dedicated builder/owner community continue to show signs of strength... And growth.

Two ongoing projects, possibly heading for kit production, are pretty exciting. The  Velocity V-Twin, which continues to be the hottest product at Velocity is being stretched into a six-place configuration (which may, ultimately be built as a single or a twin) and one of the V-Twins will soon fly... as a turbo-prop! HAI Heli-Expo 2021 is officially cancelled... After an increase in rumors about important cancellations by critical companies in the helicopter industry like Sikorsky, Bell, Airbus, Robinson, and more, HAI has made the decision that was expected... HAI Boss Jim Viola sent us a note explaining that, "HAI has made the difficult decision to cancel HAI HELI-EXPO 2021, scheduled for late March in New Orleans..." The FCC still seems ignorant of the dangers posed by the Ligado effort... one that presents extensive interference and hazards for the world’s aircraft. On Jan. 19, 2021, a broad coalition comprising 75 companies and trade organizations sent a letter to the chair and commissioners of the Federal Communications Commission, which regulates interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
