Man Denied In Attempt To Claim Airplane He Alleges Was Stolen

Federal Court In Chicago Says Statute Of Limitations Has Expired

Richard Vartanian says that back in the 1960s, he bought a P-51D Mustang from Canada. Sometime between 1974 and 1985, Vartanian says that airplane was stolen.

The Associated Press reports that Vartanian contacted law enforcement about his stolen airplane in 1985, but it was not located. He revived his search about 15 years ago when he read an article about a P-51D which mentioned the current owners of the airplane he believes is his.

Vartanian took his case to court, trying to retake possession of the classic aircraft, but last week, a federal appeals court in Chicago denied his claim. Too much time had passed for the court to make any "reliable decision about what happened to Vertanian's plane.

The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said in it decision that the statute of limitations to pursue his claim had expired.
