While Still a Ways from Production, Joby Keeps Advancing
Joby Aviation announced the successful completion of the 2nd of 4 system reviews required under the type certification process, marking the halfway point of a multi-day audit by FAA personnel.
The review serves to validate the overall architecture of the aircraft and ensure that Joby's development process is on the right track, one that's being given particular attention given the complex and fairly novel propulsion systems. The reviews take place alongside the ongoing Means of Compliance reviews, as well as other certification documentation and planning that cover all the nitty gritty aspects of the Joby aircraft and its myriad subsystems. Last September, the company mentioned that 84% of its Means of Compliance had been accepted by the FAA, with four area-specific certification plans submitted for approval.
“Progress on certification is a key area of focus for this nascent sector, and we’re pleased to mark our continued leadership with the successful completion of our second System Review," said Didier Papadopoulos, Head of Aircraft OEM at Joby. "We’re confident that our aircraft design is on track to meet the FAA’s expectations regarding system-level safety, redundancy, and overall aircraft architecture. We’re grateful to the FAA for their dedication to safety and deep engagement on our ongoing certification program"
Last spring, the company received its Part 135 Air Carrier Certificate, opening the way for the company to operate a commercial air taxi service once full aircraft approval is obtained. Should everything go smoothly, Joby could be operating a commercial passenger service in 2025.
