Fundraiser to Assist Folds of Honor, Gold Star Families
A team of veterans are aiming for a world-record to support Gold Star families - skydiving all 7 continents in the span of a single week.
The team behind it has begun raising awareness of their efforts, boosting a nonprofit that gives educational scholarships to the families of those lost in the line of duty. So far, the only comparable record attempt was an attempt by Martin Downs in 2008, when he set the Guinness World Record for the fastest time to complete a skydive on 6 continents in 8 days. The only one missing from his itinerary was Antarctica, understandably so given the difficulty in obtaining passage and permission there.
First on the roster: the team will connect in Punta Arenas, Chile, on New Year's Eve, where they'll remain stationed to knock out the first target on their list in Antarctica. The team decided that the fickle weather conditions were the most difficult variable to overcome when planning their record, so they'll rely on mother nature to set the timer.
"We want to go as fast as possible so that it's hard for anybody to break our record," said retired Army Ranger Jariko Denman in an interview earlier this week. "And just the more rad it can be is more visibility on the Folds of Honor foundation."
"We want to start the clock once we exit the aircraft there, rather than starting at the other end and being smooth sailing and then sitting in Antarctica for six days waiting for weather to clear," Denman added.
From there, the team will jump into Chile, Spain, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, and Florida in a cannonball run. The Triple7 team will be followed by Daniel Myrick of Blair Witch fame as he documents the happenings throughout their journey.
