USS Enterprise To Inactivate After 51 Years Of Service

'Big E' Was The World's First Nuclear Aircraft Carrier

After 51 years of distinguished service, the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) will inactivate on Dec. 1, 2012, in a ceremony to be held at Norfolk Naval Station, in Norfolk, VA. The inactivation ceremony will be the last official public event for the ship, and will serve as a celebration of life for the ship and the more than 100,000 Sailors who served aboard.

Army Soldier Jeremy Sawyer was serving his country in Helmand Province of Afghanistan when an improvised explosive device (IED) was detonated just three feet from him, taking both of his legs at the knee, rupturing both ear drums and causing numerous other injuries. Since then, he has been recovering at the Center for the Intrepid at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas.
