New Satellite 'Morphology' Would Harvest Usable Parts From 'Retired' Spacecraft
Aurora Flight Sciences was recently selected by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) for the Phoenix program to explore development of a new satellite morphology through creation of "satlets" capable of harvesting key components from retired spacecraft in earth orbit.
The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and the panel's ranking Democrat have sent a letter to Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta urging the Pentagon to consider SpaceX and Orbital Sciences for a launch contract for a critical program.
NASA has named space shuttle veteran Robert Behnken as the new head of its astronaut corps. Behnken becomes the 14th Chief of the Astronaut Office, which was established in 1962.
