Narita Control Tower Closed By Typhoon Winds

Controllers Abandoned The Tower At Narita International Airport Monday For An Hour

The control tower at Narita International Airport was closed for about an hour Monday as winds from Typhoon Mindulle reached about 78 miles per hour at the airport.

The tower closed at about 2:20 p.m. local time, according to a report from the Associated Press. It was the first time the tower has closed due to a typhoon. It had closed once before when a magnitude 9.0 earthquake shook the area in March 2011.

The storm made landfall south of Tokyo shortly after noon on Monday. Airport officials said 88 international and 34 domestic arrivals and departures were cancelled. The storm caused more than 400 domestic flight cancellations at Haneda Airport in Tokyo.
