AFSC Pulls Out Of Air Charity Network

Dissension In The Ranks At The Former Angel Flight

Aero-News has received a copy of a letter sent to pilots last week flying for Angel Flight South Central and Grace Flight of America, announcing the organization's resignation from the Air Charity Network, formerly known as Angel Flight of America.

"There often comes a time when organizations, like people, reach certain critical crossroads," writes AFSC Chairman O.R. "Butch" Smith. "We at Angel Flight South Central have reached just such a pivotal place. After prolonged thought, careful planning and a thoughtful review of our own goals and aspirations in seeking the best way to support our pilots and help those in need, your board reached a significant decision.

"We have determined it is no longer in our best interests to continue as a part of Air Charity Network, formerly Angel Flight of America."

That resignation went into effect Friday, according to the letter. Smith writes Grace Flight of America will "immediately initiate a logical, sequential and focused effort to grow into a nationwide charitable flying organization.

"It is important to note that we will continue to utilize and vigorously defend our name, Angel Flight, in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico," Smith adds. "As we enter new states and in our national media efforts, Grace Flight will represent the charitable efforts of our pilots and patrons and will be the name our patients/passengers come to know."

Smith writes AFSC was compelled to take this action due to concerns expressed by pilots, customers and patients over the terms of AFSC's membership in Air Charity Network.

"Without the restrictions of our former association," Smith writes, "we are able to explore new and exciting ways to further our mission, including:

  • "Support for volunteer pilots in the form of significant fuel discounts and even a potential for partial fuel expense rebates.
  • "No borders or restrictions on growth.
  • "One pilot application.
  • "One logo.
  • "No fees for pilot applicants.
  • "Pilots are free to accept or seek missions anywhere, across any geography, at any time and with as much advance notice as works for them.
  • "One computer system listing all missions.
  • "Enhanced pilot recognition to include Command Pilot and Senior Command Pilot designations.
  • "Opportunity for increased cooperation with faith based organizations."

Smith adds AFSC will also allow members to serve as Board Members and Directors for the newly-created State Wing organization, aimed at developing AFSC branches in states not currently served by AFSC. Elections are to be held in conjunction with the Grace Flight/AFSC Annual General Meeting/State Wing Convention set for next Saturday, October 13 at the Intercontinental Hotel in Addison, TX.

"As you can see by the partial list of new initiatives and expanded goals above, this is an exciting time!" writes Smith. "Expansion into new territories will come as quickly as the organization can manage, but expect a Southwest Airlines-style of gradual and measured growth."
