Aero-TV: Viking Aircraft Engines - More Power, More Honda!

Auto-Conversion Aircraft Engines Have Come A Long Way…

At the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo 2016, there was more than just talk about the bad weather and good airplanes. Also being displayed at the Expo were engine choices for experimental aircraft. One of these engines, called the Viking, led ANN CEO and Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell, to stop by their display to see what was new.

The Viking 130 aircraft engine is based on a Honda automotive engine, and has been a popular conversion engine for experimental aircraft for a number of years. Jim talked with Jan Eggenfellner, the President of Viking Engines, to find out about some advancements made at Viking.

Eggenfellner pointed out that the gearbox reduction drive system has been elongated to allow the engine to sit as an upright in-line installation. The new reduction drive also places the prop higher on the engine.

Eggenfellner said Viking is using as much of the high-end technology that Honda provides as is possible, and he points to such things as a gasoline direct injection system and variable valve timing. Eggenfellner explains the advanced features of the automotive engines that traditional aircraft engines don’t have.

As the discussion continues, you’ll see the 130 engine up close and hear technical details regarding its operation.
