Cherokee Involved In Runway Robbery

Not The Plane... The Jeep

There was another incident involving a Cherokee on Tuesday, but this time it was the vehicle and not the plane... but the vehicle was involved in a runway heist.

Confused? Well, so were the passengers on a recent Scandinavian Airlines flight from Britain to Sweden. They probably felt like they were suddenly transported into the old TV show Gunsmoke when five masked robbers wielding machines guns pulled a modern-day stagecoach robbery on the runway at Landvetter Airport in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The dramatic incident began when two cars -- a Jeep Cherokee (file photo of type, above right) and Volvo -- smashed through gates at the airport and then confronted luggage handlers as they were unloading crates of foreign currency from the jet's cargo hold.

The SAS jet had just arrived from London’s Heathrow Airport.

The robbers were able to haul off a "large sum" of foreign currency -- while some confused passengers onboard the aircraft watched the situation unfold.

After the "planerobbers" left the scene, police partially evacuated the airport because the gang left behind a suspicious bag on the runway with "antennae" sticking out of the top. Police thought it was a bomb.

The getaway vehicles were later found a short distance from the airport, in flames.

On Thursday, Scottish police reported they had one suspect in custody... but they didn't give further details. Stay tuned...
