NASA Opens New Testing Facility For Future Space Vehicles

Hydro Impact Basin Has Already Tested Orion Mockup

NASA held an official ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new $1.7 million Hydro Impact Basin facility at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA, Tuesday morning.

The new water basin is located at the historic gantry, where Neil Armstrong first trained to walk on the moon. The water basin expands NASA Langley's capabilities to include water impact, landing and recovery testing and will be used to certify any future spacecraft for water landings.

The water basin is 115-feet long, 90-feet wide, 20-feet deep and holds one million gallons of water. Testing to support NASA's new deep space exploration vehicle, the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV), began this summer at the facility. NASA Langley engineers performed three successful drop tests of a 22,000-pound Orion MPCV test article.
