PA Nonprofit Facilitates Aviation Instruction

Flying.org Wants To Encourage Young People To Pursue Aviation Careers

A nonprofit organization based at John Murtha Johnstown-Cambria County Airport (KJST) in Pennsylvania has a mission to "inform, enlighten and provide financial assistance to anybody who wants to pursue a career in aviation,” according to Melissa Pensiero, the co-founder of Flying.org.

The Tribune-Democrat newspaper reports that Flying.org was founded by Melissa and her husband Chad to help encourage young people to pursue careers in aviation. Chad is a professional pilot for UPS.

Melissa told the paper that the couple founded Flying.org because the don't think aviation is being presented as a viable career option to young people. "They need the doors opened," she said.

Flying.org has recently leased space in a hangar at KJST. While they currently do not own any airplanes, they intend to open an office at the airport and display information about aviation careers, as well as some hardware. While they may eventually own an airplane, Pensiero told the paper that opening a flight school is not in their plans. They are hoping to develop a close relationship with Nulton Aviation's flight school, which has partnerships with area colleges.
