Australian Model Builder Hopes To Soon Fly Huge Boeing 747 Model

Aircraft Measures 18 Feet From Nose To Tail

One of the world's largest model airplanes is set for its initial flight next month in Western Australia.

The online news site communitynews.com.au reports that the model has been built by RC enthusiast Andrew Herzfeld over the past two years. It is 18 feet long, weighs 143 pounds, and is powered by four miniature jet engines developing about 150 pounds of thrust.

Herzfeld said that the airplane is constructed of carbon fiber, fiberglass, plywood, balsa wood and polystyrene foam ... along with "lots of coffee and elbow grease."

The plane carries just over five gallons of fuel, giving it a flying time of just about 15 minutes, according to the builder.

When Herzfeld flies his plane, it won't be from a typical model aircraft field. The flight will take place early next month at a full-sized airport either in Wagin or Wyalkatchem in West Australia.

The controller is a 28-channel computerized radio controlling 44 systems including retractable landing gear, brakes, nav lights and engins.

Herzfeld said that a certified Giant Model inspector has certified the airplane at each stage of the build, and he has been conducting extensive ground testing and inspections prior to the first flight.

If you're in the neighborhood, the model will be on display at the WA Model Aircraft Sports Center Expo November 4 and 5.
