Search For Missing Indonesian Plane Suspended

Will Continue Thursday

Bad weather and dense mountain foliage forced rescue and recovery teams to suspend their search Wednesday after a deHavilland DHC-6 Twin Otter went down in the central highlands of West Papau, Indonesia. Officials, however, promised to resume their efforts Thursday morning.

The aircraft, owned by GT-Air, went missing shortly after take-off. There are conflicting reports on the number of people aboard the aircraft. News reports from both Indonesia and nearby New Guinea indicate there were either 17 or 18 people on the aircraft -- three of them crew members.

The Twin Otter departed Timika at 1050 local and was to have landed at Enarotali 25 minutes later. It never arrived.

"We lost contact with the plane around six to eight minutes after it took off," Timika police chief Paulus Waterpauw told Reuters.
