Official EAA AirVenture App Available For iPad, iPhone,
Android
You would think that it wouldn't make sense to devote a bunch of
work into developing a smartphone app for a single event, and you'd
probably be right - if the event wasn't on the scale of EAA
AirVenture Oshkosh.
Sporty's has released the official EAA AirVenture 2011 Fly-In
App for both Apple devices (iPhones, iPads, iPod Touch) and Android
devices (phones and tablets). Designed for those arriving by ground
transportation as well as those flying in, it includes maps,
guides, schedules and late-breaking news. The AirVenture app allows
the purchase of advance tickets, and can get up-to-the-minute
announcements via the live news and Twitter feeds. Helpful Fly-In
information includes the complete AirVenture NOTAM for arrival and
departure procedures and VFR route planning, aerial images and much
more information for Oshkosh-bound pilots.
And, as you might expect, Sporty's Vice President John Zimmerman
reminds us, "Of course, if you're flying to Oshkosh, you may need
tie downs, batteries, charts andany number of things, so this app
will take you right to Sporty's online store so you can stock
up."
Once at the show, the AirVenture app has maps of the entire show
grounds, including individual hangar and display areas for
precisely locating the exhibit you'd like to see. The master list
of forums and presentations allows you to organize events into a
favorites list so you don't miss a moment of the action. "You can
also review the list of exhibitors with this app and mark those you
want to visit in a favorites list," says Zimmerman. "You can plan a
route so you can see everything you want to see without wasting
time searching for a particular exhibitor."
Sporty's promises the daily schedule of forums, workshops, the
daily air show and the evening programs will help make your visit
personal and productive. The app is being distributed free of
charge. "We created and donated this app as a service to AirVenture
attendees," said Zimmerman. "All of us pilots who love our phones
and iPads will be able to put them to more good use with this free
app from Sporty's."
