FlightSafety Student Pilot Busts NASA Airspace

Lost in a cloud bank, Piper Arrow emerges in restricted zone over Cape Canaveral

A FlightSafety student pilot flying a Piper Arrow PA-28-161 property of the company's Vero Beach (FL) facility found himself in restricted airspace over Cape Canaveral (FL) after getting "lost in a cloud bank" during a training flight.

The pilot, Bryant Rals of Guyton (GA), realized where he was and quickly changed course. By that time, however, NASA aircraft had intercepted his plane and followed him to St Augustine (FL), where he was greeted by Sheriff's Deputies from St. Johns County.

At the request of the FBI, the deputies interviewed the pilot and passed on the results to the agency as well as to the FAA. News4 Jacksonville reported that authorities believe the violation was entirely accidental.
