Restored C-47 Headed Back To Normandy For D-Day Anniversary

Antique Transport Currently Resides At The National Warplane Museum In New York

The French government has requested the presence of a restored C-47 transport plane to reprise the role it played during the D-Day invasion of Normandy 70 years ago this summer.

The airplane is currently on exhibit at the National Warplane Museum in New York, but for June 6, 2014, it will again fly to Normandy and drop paratroopers "behind enemy lines."

The Blaze relays a report from the Associated Press that the paratroopers will be made up of active and retired military personnel. They will descend on Saint-Mer-Eglise much as allied troops did 70 years ago.

The plane, dubbed "Whiskey 7", will be one of several C-47s that are expected to take part in the re-enactment. The route to France will take the plane to Labrador, Greenland, Iceland, Scotland, and Germany.
