Congressman Larsen Praises Finalization Of Pilot Safety Rules

Had Urged Secretary Foxx To Make Pilot Qualifications A Priority

Rep. Rick Larsen, (D-WA), the ranking member of the House Aviation Subcommittee, on Wednesday praised the FAA’s announcement that it will finalize critical pilot safety rules as directed by Congress. Larsen wrote to Secretary Foxx last Tuesday asking the Department of Transportation to finalize the rules “as swiftly as possible.”

“Flying in America has never been safer, but the tragic crash of Asiana Flight 214 is an urgent reminder that we must still constantly look for ways to make it even safer,” Larsen (pictured) said. “I have been pushing these rules because the American flying public needs to know the government is doing everything we can to make sure the skies are safe.”

The new pilot safety rules are a result of the Airline Safety and Federal Aviation Administration Extension Act of 2010. Following the fatal crash of Colgan Air Flight 3407 in 2009, Congress directed the Federal Aviation Administration to develop new rules governing pilot training and safety.

“The families of the victims of Colgan 3407 have been determined advocates for getting these rules done. I applaud their tireless work to make sure that other families don’t face the same tragedy that they did in 2009.”
