Airborne 09.11.19: Tico Belle, Transat Balloon Crossing, Moon Colony

Also: 777X Load Testing, 1000th Super Puma, GE Aviation Trade Secrets Theft, Chandrayaan 2

An airplane that once carried paratroopers into France on D-Day has taken a role in providing humanitarian relief to the hurricane-ravaged islands of the Bahamas in the wake of Dorian. Tico Belle, a C-47 Skytrain owned by the Valiant Air Command based in Titusville, FL flew to Orlando International Airport on Saturday to pick up about 5,000 pounds of much-needed supplies, and then carried the cargo to Sandy Point on Great Abaco Island.

Norman Daniels, commander of the Valiant Air Command, said that the aircraft was viable, and "we have volunteer pilots who are willing to make the trip." In the summer of 2020, Deborah Day and Mike Scholes will take on the exciting and challenging record-breaking attempt adventure to fly across the Atlantic Ocean in a Cameron Balloons built, lighter-than-air, gas and hot-air combination balloon. The pilots plan to take off from New Brunswick, East Coast of Canada with the aim to land “where the winds take them” over Europe. The adventurous flight is expected to take between 5 to 7 days aloft and the couple also hope to break existing distance (the Atlantic Ocean is approximately 2,520 nautical miles), duration and altitude records for this size of aerostat. The Open Lunar Foundation has revealed plans for a moon village after spending some five years developing the plan mostly in secret. Venture capitalist Steve Jurvetson posted a message on Twitter last week indicating that the establishment of the settlement would cost around $5 billion. "At $5B, it’s not only achievable within current NASA budgets, it offers the tantalizing possibility that a single passionate individual could fund the entire program as their legacy!” Jurvetson Tweeted. The Open Lunar Foundation is comprised of a group of tech executives and engineers who hope to make the vision a reality. Many of the foundation's members have former ties to NASA. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
