Chambers Of Commerce Urge Settlement In American, US Airways Suit

Letter Calls On U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder To Drop The Action

A letter from 26 Chamber of Commerce and other economic development groups around the country urges U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to end the Justice Department's attempt to block the merger of American Airlines and U.S. Airways.

In the letter, which was posted in its entirety online by USA Today, the business and economic development leaders tell the AG that the merger would lead to increased competition in the airline industry, not reduce customer choices.

"With more than 6,700 daily flights to 336 locations in more than 50 countries around the world, the new American Airlines will offer more options to travelers, businesses and organizations. This expanded network is an asset for local businesses; the modern economy demands mobility and adaptability, and the new American will help connect businesses with customers wherever they are. Cities and towns will gain access to new markets through the expanded network of the new American, making their communities more attractive to new investment and helping their economies grow," the letter states.

"At the same time, the combination will provide job security for the more than 100,000 employees of the two airlines. These employees have endorsed the combination because they know that a better, more competitive American Airlines provides greater opportunities and benefits for them and their families. And these advantages extend far beyond the airlines: the men and women of the new American are the people who patronize our members' stores and live in our towns. Job security for them helps strengthen local economies around the country."

The business organizations say that American and U.S Airways have been "model" corporate citizens, and that the merger will "benefit the U.S. economy, the airline industry and local communities throughout the United States."
