Passenger Captures Video Of Delta MD-88 In-Flight Engine Failure

Plane Made A Successful Emergency Landing In North Carolina

A Delta Airlines MD-88 suffered an engine failure on a flight from Atlanta to Baltimore Monday, and a passenger captured video of the incident.

Fox News reports that the flight left Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta at about 12:48 local time Monday. About an hour into the flight, passengers heard a loud boom, and smoke billowed into the cabin of the aircraft.

A video captured and posted on Twitter by user Logan Webb shows the engine's spinner rattling inside the cowling of the engine, and an orange glow deep inside the engine. The plane diverted to Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina, and made a successful emergency landing. There were no injuries reported among the passengers and crew.

Gizmodo reports that, according to ABC News, the plane is 32-years-old. It is reportedly the oldest type of airplane in service with any major U.S. Airline.

Delta plans to retire all of its MD-88 airplanes next year. However, the airline said in a statement that the engine on this particular aircraft has already been replaced, and it was slated to return to service Wednesday.
