Airborne 05.09.18: Uber VTOL Air Taxi, SWA Update, OSH18!

Also: King Online Drone Course, CL-415EAF Conversion Program, Carrier JFK 75%, Wichita Aviation Pathway

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi is showing off a model of the company's concept for a VTOL flying taxi it hopes to have in revenue service in two years.

Khosrowshahi said that the concept is to "create the network around those vehicles so that regular people can take these taxis in the air for longer distances when they want to avoid traffic at affordable prices." Uber chief product officer Jeff Holden said that the program is intended to be "community friendly". The aircraft will initially be piloted, but would eventually be autonomous and carry up to four passengers in an effort to reduce costs through ride-sharing. Uber says that for the program to be profitable, it will have to have mass appeal and not be limited to a niche market. The NTSB has issued an investigative update for its ongoing investigation of the fatal, April 17, engine failure on Southwest Airlines flight 1380. The Boeing 737, powered by CFM International engines, experienced a failure of the left CFM-56-B engine after departing New York’s LaGuardia Airport. The engine experienced a failure of a fan blade, which resulted in the loss of the engine inlet and cowling. Fragments from the cowling and engine inlet struck the fuselage, causing a rapid depressurization. From July 23-29, more than 10,000 aircraft and a half a million flight enthusiasts will descend for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018. This year’s event will again feature the One Week Wonder project. Over a seven-day period, volunteers and attendees will build a complete Van’s RV-12. Piece by piece, visitors will assemble the aircraft and sign the builders’ logbook. Construction will begin at 8 a.m. on Monday, July 23 – AirVenture’s opening day – with a goal for completion by the end of the afternoon air show on Sunday, July 29. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
