AeroSports Update: This ‘n That

In This Issue Of AeroSports Update, We Have Some Short Topics To Review

Sometimes the whole story is a short story, and such is the case today. Here’s a quick “Around the Patch” that includes one new story and the others are review.

A Change At FSS
The Feds remind us that on August 15, that’s today, Lockheed Martin Flight Service will be renamed Leidos Flight Service. Some of us remember when the flight service station were operated by the FAA. Then, the FAA turned the operation over to private business and Lockheed Martin became the successful bidder. In a deal put together by Lockheed Martin and Leidos Holding, Inc., a new operator will now be in place.

Business at Flight Service won’t change. Such things as telephone numbers, user passwords, profiles, and other information pilots exchange with Lockheed, CSRA, and DUATS will not be affected.

New Third Class Medical Law
Congress passed the new third class medical law and it was signed by the President. However, as it stands now, nothing has changed. It is still up to the FAA rewrite the regulations addressing the requirements for a third class medical. The FAA has been given a timeline to rewrite the regulations, but nothing in the law provides any specific consequences if the FAA fails to meet the deadline.

Remember, these medical changes do not affect the sport pilot rules in any way. Sport pilots will continue to be able to use their state-issued driver’s license as proof of meeting the medical requirements.

Aircraft Registration
The aircraft registration certificate must be on board the aircraft, and it must be current. Aircraft registration used to be a simple affair only requiring FAA notification for a new owner or a change of address. Now, it must be renewed every three years. Aircraft owners will be notified about the renewal, but sometimes the notification doesn’t seem to work. A recent example of this related to one of Donald Trump’s aircraft.
