Designer Views Aircraft With Twin Pusher Motors And Side-By-Side Seating As A Trainer
An international panel of judges has selected the design project Flyvolt G 208 by Bruno Giardino to receive the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Aerospace and Aircraft Design category.
Bruno Giardino, the project leader of the Flyvolt G 208 says that the electrically-powered aircraft would offer comfortable flight due to the low noise levels and smooth-operating motors, and have the added benefit of instantaneous power availability. "This kind of aircraft is ideally suited for flying schools – its similarity to a motor glider makes it complementary to gliding itself," he said. The low weight and small size of the motors has allowed their location on the extremities of the box-tail, ensuring free and undisturbed airflow around the wings and fuselage and potentially improving the overall aerodynamic performance.
The motors use brushless technology, characterized by the absence of vibration, high reliability and low maintenance costs. They are powered by two lithium polymer compound battery packs, each of 54 cells, weighing about 100 pounds and located behind the seats. They are designed to automatically move to adapt to various CG conditions.
Initial calculations show that about 15 percent power is enough to maintain level flight. Takeoff and climb to cruise altitude will obviously require a greater power demand. In a flight school situation it is estimated that a 1.5 hour lesson can be achieved on a single charge. According to data supplied by the battery manufacturer, approximately 1,000 charge cycles should be possible, helping to minimize the cost-per-flight.
The Bronze A' Design Award is geared toward projects that have carried out an exemplary level of quality in design- and not just aviation. The designs are judged by a panel in three different categories, composed of academic, professional and focus group members. The mission of the A' Award and Competition is to provide a fair, ethical and competitive platform for companies, designers and innovators from all design fields with different experience levels, diverse disciplines and market focus, while providing them a global audience to showcase their success and talents.
