Red Cross To Fly Drone To Assess Harvey Damage

Flights Will Begin Next Week Over Houston

The American Red Cross will begin using a drone this week to assess damage in areas of Houston flooded by Hurricane Harvey, in a test program that could be used after other major disasters in the U.S.

The agency will deploy one drone in a one-week test in an area that was particularly hard-hit by Harvey. The program will use a drone built by CyPhy Works, a Danvers, MA-based drone manufacturer. The program is being funded by the charitable foundation of United Parcel Service, according to a report from Reuters.

The images captured by the drone will be used to assess damage and better direct aid to affected areas. It could also be shared with other organizations, according to UPS spokesman Glenn Zaccara.

The tethered drone can fly up to 400 feet in altitude and can capture several days worth of photos of homes miles from the actual point of flight in a single mission.
