Two U.S. Senators Introduce Resolution Applauding GA
It's no secret that GA pilots can be counted on to help in
times of crisis, whether here in the U.S., or when the people
affected are some of our closest, and neediest, international
neighbors. Such was the case in the aftermath of Haiti's
devastating earthquake, and U.S. Senators Mark Begich (D-AK right)
and Mike Johanns (R-NE below) acknowledged that effort on Tuesday
by introducing a Senate resolution formally recognizing the
contributions of general aviators to relief efforts which included
transportation for medical staff and relief personnel.
"With Haiti's transportation network in ruins, general aviators
from across the country selflessly volunteered their time, money
and most importantly their planes, to help ship over one million
pounds of cargo and supplies to the people of Haiti," Begich said.
"This resolution is a meaningful way to recognize their
contributions and encourage their continued generosity."
"I applaud the aviation community and specifically our pilots
who assisted our friends and neighbors in Haiti through thousands
of relief flights," Johanns said. "Their acts of humanitarianism
and goodwill are worthy of our praise and support, and I am pleased
to recognize their efforts."
General aviation pilots made over 4,500 flights in the 30 days
following the earthquake. General aviation proved vital during
rescue efforts by serving areas inaccessible to larger
aircraft.
Founded in September of last year, the Senate General Aviation
Caucus works with pilots, aircraft owners, the aviation industry,
and relevant government agencies to promote a safe and vibrant
environment for general aviation. Alaska has an estimated six times
as many pilots and 16 times as many aircraft per capita as the rest
of the country. There are over 220,000 GA aircraft and 650,000
certified pilots in the U.S.
