Lockheed Martin Helicopter Business May Suffer In Third Quarter

Downturn In The Oil And Gas Industry Slowing Demand

An ongoing downturn in the oil and gas industry may affect Lockheed Martin's Sikorsky helicopter division, according to analysts.

The website Marketrealist.com reports that research from the firm Wood Mackenzie indicates that the oil and gas industry is looking at investment cuts of more than $1 trillion for the remainder of the decade, causing some helicopters servicing the industry to be idled. Currently, about 25 percent of the global helicopter fleet serves the oil and gas sector.

Sikorsky currently has the largest backlog on its order book among helicopter manufacturers. But 75 percent of those orders are from military customers, while the oil and gas industry represents only seven percent.

The analysis also indicates that Sikorsky has a larger aftermarket risk than other manufacturers.
