Airplane Impacts Lawnmower At Airport During Landing

Mower Operator's Hand Severed In The Accident

A small plane landing at Taylorsville Airport in North Carolina Saturday afternoon struck a lawnmower cutting the airport grass resulting in the serious injury of the person operating the mower.

The Daily News website reports that the pilot ... 84-year-old Edward Sisson, … was uninjured in the accident, but the collision severed one of the mower operator's hands. 74-year-old John Ruffy was traveling east on the mower, and Sisson was making an easterly approaching to to the uncontrolled airport in the airplane, which according to the FAA is an Champion 7ECA. Authorities said Ruffy could not hear the plane, and Sisson could not see the mower.

Both the plane and the mower flipped over after the collision. Ruffy was transported to Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem NC where he was listed in critical condition, according to the site.

Sisson is considered an experienced pilot, and was flying to Taylorsville from his home in Crossville, TN to visit family. No charges have been filed, according to authorities.
