Greenpeace Crashes Drone Into French Nuclear Power Plant

Dressed Up The Aircraft As Superman Before The Stunt

A drone made up to look like Superman was crashed into a French nuclear plant Tuesday by the environmental activist group Greenpeace to demonstrate what the group says is the site's vulnerability to such attacks.

The New York Post reports that Greenpeace said it flew its drone into the No-Fly zone around the Bugey nuclear plant near Lyon before crashing it into the wall of a spent-fuel pool building. “This action again highlights the extreme vulnerability of this type of buildings, which contain the highest amount of radioactivity in nuclear plants,” Greenpeace said in a statement.

The state-controlled electric utility EDF acknowledged that two drones had been flown over the site. One drone was intercepted by French police. EDF said it plans to file a complaint with local authorities, but "the presence of these drones had no impact on the security of the installations."

Greenpeace has previously staged break-ins of French nuclear plants, which supply 75 percent of the country's electricity. The activists say that the spent-fuel pool buildings have not been built to absorb an outside attack, and are particularly vulnerable.
