Elaine Chao Confirmed As Secretary Of Transportation

Wins Support Of 93 Senators

While many of President Donald Trump's cabinet nominees have run into opposition in the U.S. Senate, that was not the case for Elaine Chao, who was confirmed as the Secretary of Transportation Tuesday.

The vote to confirm Chao was 93-6.

Chao is no stranger to government service. She had been Labor Secretary and later Deputy Secretary of Transportation under former President George W. Bush.

Chao is married to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY)

CNN reports that Senate Commerce Committee chairman John Thune (R-SD) said that "It would be hard to come up with a more qualified nominee than Secretary Chao." Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL), the top Democrat on the committee, said she has the "experience and common sense" to give level-headed advice to the new President. Nelson was referencing the recent executive order concerning travel by some Middle-Eastern passport holders to the U.S. Chao told Nelson that she had not been consulted before Trump issued the executive order.

Chao assumes her new role immediately, replacing acting Secretary of Transportation Michael Huerta, who remains as the Administrator of the FAA.
