Pilot Makes Emergency Landing On Oregon Freeway

Unscathed, Resumes Trip Three Hours Later

The pilot of a vintage DeHavilland DHC-2 Beaver amphibian made an attention-grabbing emergency landing Sunday morning on an Oregon highway.

The Salem News reports Jerry Alan Scudero was heading to an airport in Pendleton, en route to Ketchikan, AK when the weather took a turn for the worse. Faced with lousy flying conditions, Scudero put his plane (file photo of type, above) down on the first available surface -- Interstate 84.

Scudero brought the plane in for an uneventful landing. He continued to taxi down the road for approximately two miles, looking for an area to turn off.

It was at that time Oregon State Patrol Senior Trooper Robert Hereau, who was on the scene of a non-emergency traffic accident, saw the plane approaching in his rearview mirror. He allowed the plane to pass, and Scudero was able to pull off on a wide area to the side of the freeway, allowing traffic that had backed up behind the plane to pass.

Neither Scudero nor his passenger, Jerry Foresyth, were any worse for wear from the incident.

The plane suffered no damage; in fact, with the help of a tow truck, Scudero was able to pull back onto the highway once the weather cleared. The men took off three hours after the incident, and resumed their trip.
