Shoppers Go To Sporting Goods Store Via Helicopter

FAA And Local Police Say Landing Was Legal

If you're going to pop over to the local Sportsman's Warehouse ... chances are even if you're a licensed helicopter pilot, you probably wouldn't fly there. But that's exactly what happened in Salem, Oregon, where a pilot and a passenger used the store's parking lot for an LZ ... with the permission of air traffic controllers at McNary Field in Salem.

The Statesman Journal newspaper reports that Salem Police spokesman Lt. Dave Okada said that the pilot of the aircraft from a McMinneville, OR helicopter school asked for permission to land at the store rather than at the airport, which is less than two miles away. Okada said "it was a legal landing, and we had units on the scene."

A Sportsman's Warehouse cashier told the paper that management had been notified that there would be a helicopter landing in the parking lot. Sadie Gullicksen said that the staff was told "two men wanted to go fishing and needed some fishing gear." They were in the store a total of about half an hour.

The results of the fishing trip were not reported.
