NBAA, NATA, Airlines Note Passing Of Congressman Jim Oberstar

Remembers As A Trusted Voice Of Aviation On Capitol Hill

Airlines and aviation associations continue to note the passing of Minnesota Congressman Jim Oberstar (D) (pictured), who died Saturday of unknown causes.

“Few Americans have had a bigger impact on our nation's transportation system than Congressman Jim Oberstar,” said NBAA president and CEO Ed Bolen. “From his days as a staffer on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee through his tenure as committee chairman, he worked tirelessly to connect Americans through transportation. His grasp of history and policy were unparalleled, and our nation is better for his service. Congressman Oberstar was a true champion for general aviation, understanding and promoting its value to our economy and transportation system. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Jean and the Oberstar family.”

"Congressman Jim Oberstar was a leader when it came to transportation. He spent his entire career dedicated to strengthening our nation's transportation systems and basic infrastructure," said United Airlines Chairman, President and CEO Jeff Smisek in a statement. "His was a trusted voice when it came to aviation. He advocated for the United States aviation industry, its employees, its customers and its airports around the world. The United Airlines family sends thoughts and prayers to all the Oberstar family."

Similar sentiments were expressed by Delta Air Lines CEO Richard Anderson. "Jim was a wise and trusted friend for more than 25 years. He understood our nation's need for strong and sustainable infrastructure, and his unique expertise in aviation left an indelible mark on the airline industry," Anderson said. "Jim's track record in navigating complex issues serves as a model for us all. So often, Jim talked lovingly about Jean and his family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them today."

“American aviation, and general aviation in particular, mourns the passing of one of its greatest proponents," said NATA president and CEO Thomas Hendricks. "From his position in Congress, Jim Oberstar championed the causes of aviation safety, modernization and infrastructure development. America owes a great deal to his unflagging interest and support in developing what is the world's best aviation system. NATA joins the rest of the aviation community in recognizing the accomplishments of this great legislator.”
