Fatigue Management Seminar Set for NBAA

To Be Held at Beginning of Convention (not End)

The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) will hold a two-day Fatigue Management Workshop next Sunday and Monday, October 5 and 6, in conjunction with the NBAA 56th Annual Meeting & Convention, to be held October 7 to 9 in Orlando (FL). The workshop will address fatigue in corporate flight operations. Dr. Mark Rosekind, president and chief scientist of Alertness Solutions, will be joined by co-presenter John Goglia, member of the National Transportation Safety Board, and Dr. Melissa Mallis, principal investigator, NASA Fatigue Countermeasures Group.

The NBAA Fatigue Management Workshop will provide participants with knowledge and information they can apply directly to improving the safety of their flight departments. Presentations will provide an overall understanding of fatigue, its consequences for safety, performance, productivity and mood, as well as countermeasures for managing fatigue in corporate flight operations. Participants will learn how to apply new information and principles learned using actual flight scenarios and interactive breakout sessions.

The issue of fatigue has been recognized in corporate aviation as an important factor in operational safety. A NASA study conducted by Dr. Rosekind titled A Survey of Fatigue Factors in Corporate/Executive Aviation Operations found that 85 percent of corporate operators identified fatigue as a "moderate" or "serious" safety issue. The current generation of ultra long-range aircraft brings new physiological challenges to the human operator. Long-range flight operations can lead to fatigue, disruption of sleep and circadian rhythms, and degraded human performance.

To help corporate flight departments and safety auditors assess a department's vulnerability to fatigue, Alertness Solutions developed the Alertness Management Safety Evaluation (AMSE) tool, which will be distributed to all Attendees of the Fatigue Management Workshop. It also is available as a free PDF download from the Alertness Solutions web site.

Space is still available to attend the NBAA Fatigue Management Workshop. Separate payment is required for this event, which includes registration for the NBAA Convention and Static Display of Aircraft. (The cost for Members is $700 and for non-Members is $825.)
