NWA To Lay Off 2,031 Mechanics

Demands 26-Percent Reduction In Pay For Those Who Stay

The nation's fourth-largest airline is, like many other carriers, still in financial hot water. For that reason, Northwest Airlines wants to cut about 50-percent of its mechanics and cut the pay of those left by 26-percent.

They want us to negotiate a suicide pact," Ted Ludwig, president of the mechanics' union, said in an interview.

Northwest refused comment.

But the airline does say it needs to cut $1.1 billion a year. That's why CEO Douglas Steenland says it's "imperative" to cut labor costs.

Northwest has been working for two years to cut labor costs. "The time has come for all union leaders to move beyond denial and anger and act responsibly for the good of their members," Northwest's pilots' union said in a May 12 newsletter to members. "They must educate their membership on the reality of the current situation at NWA, what impact their members can and cannot have, and the potential consequences of inaction."
