Op-Ed Cautions CA Legislature About UAV Limitations

AUVSI CEO Urges State Lawmakers To Let FAA Set Rules

The California Legislature is considering a bill that would prevent unmanned aircraft from flying at an altitude below 350 over any private property in the state. And in an opinion piece in the Sacramento Bee, Brian Wynne, the president and CEO of AUVSI, says that will have a chilling effect on the emerging industry which can create tens of thousands of jobs and have a $14 billion economic impact on the state.

Wynn says that SB 142 in California and similar laws in other states "would prematurely and unnecessarily limit the tremendous societal and economic benefits that drone technology will bring." He points out the the Supreme Court has consistently held that only the FAA can regulate airspace, and the property rights do not extend into the sky.

Wynn urges California, and other states, to wait until the FAA completes its rulemaking process before passing legislation that may run contrary to federal laws.
