Citation Had Gear Up In SoCal Accident

One Victim Identified In Crash That Killed Four

More details have become available in Tuesday's fatal accident involving a Cessna Citation 560 bizjet that went down as it was apparently on approach to land at McClellan-Palomar airport in Southern California.

The FAA Preliminary Report on the accident indicates the weather at the time the jet went down was clear. San Diego County Department of Public Works spokesman Bill Polick told the Associated Press that winds were light at the airport.

Most puzzling, however, is a statement from witness Norman Boyd, who saw the plane go down as he was driving to work.

"Its landing gear was up and it was going down really fast," said Boyd. "It was heading toward the runway and the approaching speed was way beyond what it should be."

As Aero-News reported Tuesday, the Citation was coming from Hailey, ID when it went down early Tuesday morning shortly before the tower opened at CRQ. The plane slid off the far end of Runway 24, and crashed into scaffolding and into a commercial storage facility about 150 yards beyond the runway.

The jet also took out a shed that housed the ILS system for Runway 24. Per FAA NOTAM 01/009, the ILS at KCRQ is out until further notice.

The NTSB is now on scene at the accident site.

Only one of the four victims onboard the jet has been identified. Frank H. Jellinek, 60, was chairman emeritus of medical instruments supplier Fisher Scientific International.

According to FAA records, the 1994 Citation was registered to Goship Air LLC of Ketchum, ID.
