Smile And Hold Out Your Hands

Security System Prototype Installed At Hartsfield

A security system utilizing fingerprints and photographs is about to be tested at Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport (GA).  People entering the U.S. with a visa will be screened by the new system.  Arriving passengers will have their index fingerprint recorded on a scanner.  A computer then will check a watch list of known terrorists and criminals.  At the same time, a digital camera will snap a photo of the visitor.  Visitors who need a visa to enter the U.S. will have to submit to screening or be refused entry.

Most European citizens, as well as travelers from Canada and Japan, will be exempt because they do not have to have a visa to enter this country.  The screening process is part of the US-VISIT program that has been ordered for all 300 land, air and seaports of entry.  After testing next month at the Atlanta airport, the border ID checks will be put into effect at all 115 major U.S. airports and 14 seaports in January.
