Pratt & Whitney To Cut 1000 Jobs In Connecticut

Work Transferring To Georgia, Asia

Pratt & Whitney will cut 1,000 jobs from its two Connecticut locations, as it transfers that work to plants in Georgia, Singapore, and Japan.

The jet engine maker will beef up its operations in Columbus, GA, along with the two Asian locations.  The plant in Cheshire, CT will be shuttered, and operations will be scaled back at the East Hartford location despite an offer by state officials in Connecticut of $100 million in incentives to prevent the job losses. The Associated Press reports the move also comes after two years of talks with the Machinists Union in Connecticut.

The cuts are about 9 percent of Pratt & Whitney's workforce. Employment peaked in the 1960's, when the engine maker had over 20,000 employees. Company officials blame the downturn on a reduced demand for jetliners, and the engines that power them.

Earlier this year, the company shed 200 salaried jobs, mostly from East Hartford in June, and announced in August it would be closing its Indianapolis plant.
