Five Dead In Missouri Mishap

Victims Still Being Identified

Five people, including a small child, died Monday when their Piper PA-32 went down in southwestern Missouri.

The aircraft was headed from the College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout (MO), headed for Cleburn (TX). Four of the victims died at the scene. The pilot was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Springfield (MO), where he died a short time later.

The aircraft departed the college airstrip at about 0951 local on Monday, according to airport officials. There were heavy skidmarks on the runway, indicating the pilot tried to abort take-off, said college spokeswoman Camille Howell. It rolled off the end of the runway and dropped about 50 feet into a ravine, she said.

The aircraft struck a grove of trees and began to burn, she said.
