Looking For Examples
The FAI Environmental commission was
formed back in the mid-90’s to deal with the growing noise
complaints. The commission has traditionally focused on technical
issues, but is keenly aware of the growing problems associated with
political concerns. There are increasing reports from National Aero
Clubs (NAC) of problems associated with environmental concerns. In
most cases these problems are economic issues under the guise of
environmental. Regardless, the results are fewer airports (or
areas) in which to enjoy air sports. As one delegate described it,
“we are suffering death by a thousand cuts.” Taken
individually, none are significant, but collectively they threaten
our existence.
The Swedish delegate reported that they have a recent court
decision forcing the closure of a local airport during certain
holidays. It is clearly a bad decision for those air sport people
and aircraft owners that want to enjoy their holiday. We know of a
similar situation in Norway. While it might appear that these
problems are far removed from us, the fact is they are not. Flying
areas of all types are being challenged, if not for noise then
other environmentally sensitive issues. Thus it behooves us to be
monitoring our flying sites so that our activities create as little
impact on the environment, and the neighborhood, as possible. This
is one of those problems easy to overlook, but as the old saying
goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The
Environmental commission is looking for documented examples of
where airports are contributing to the quality of the environment,
and thus building a solid foundation for future air sport
activities. If you have any examples to share, please let the U.S.
Delegate, Bernald Smith. His email address is bernald@juggernaut.com.
