Naval Aviator Brought Home After 33 Years

MIA Veteran Returns Home

Navy Commander Thomas E. Dunlop launched from the USS Coral Sea on April 6, 1972. He never returned. While on a bombing mission in Quang Binh Province, North Vietnam, his A-7E Corsair II was struck by an enemy SAM. It exploded, and crashed in a fireball as his wingman watched. No signals were received from the area of the crash.

Now, just short of 33 years later, his remains will be returned to his family for burial in Arlington National Cemetery on March 21. The former resident of Neptune Beach, FL will be buried with full military honors.

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) has been working on resolving this and many other cases for years. Joint US and Vietnamese teams interviewed residents of the area on several trips between 1993 and 2002. Finally, in 2003 and 2004, personnel from the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) excavated a crash site where they found aircraft debris, personal effects, and human remains later identified as Dunlop.
