U.S. Drawing Down European Apache Fleet

Will Relocate 24 Aircraft From Germany To Alaska

Twenty-Four Apache attack helicopters will be relocated from Germany to Alaska under a cost-saving plan being implemented by the U.S. Army.

The move was announced earlier this month by Maj. Gen. Gary Cheek, Army assistant deputy chief of staff for operations, plans and policy.

The move could send conflicting signals the U.S. commitment to Europe during a time when some European leaders are concerned about Russian aggression in the region.

Defense News reports that moving the Apaches is part of a broader restructuring of aviation assets by the Army that is designed to save $12 billion. The Army has plans to close three of its 13 combat aviation brigades as part of the plan.

The 24 aircraft in the current move would be reposition from "reset facilities" in Germany to Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, AK.
