Robin Hood Takes Off

Britain's First Major Airport in 40 Years Launches First Flights

It served as an RAF Bomber Command base during the Second World War, a home to flights of Vulcans during the Cold War. But now, it's Britain's first major civilian airport in 40 years. Robin Hood Airport is open for business.

"[Robin Hood Airport is] an important step in connecting the north of England to Europe," said EU Minister Denis McShane soon after the first flight took off Saturday -- a Boeing 737-300 with 149 passengers headed for Spain. McShane was quoted by the Sunday Telegraph.

With a runway almost two miles in length, Robin Hood becomes the only British airport outside of London capable of handling the new Airbus A380, which made its first flight on Wednesday. Some 1.3 million passengers are expected to use the airport in the coming year. That figure will rise to some 2.3 million a year by the end of the decade.

Flights from the new airport, just south of Doncaster, should start arriving in the US next year.
