Authorities Probe Fatal Police Helicopter Accident In Mexico

Looking At Possible Criminal Involvement In The Crash

Mexican authorities are investigating an accident which occurred Tuesday involving a police helicopter which fatally injured four of the five people on board.

The fatalities included three police officers and the pilot of the aircraft, according to a report from CNN. Initially, Michoacan state Gov. Silvano Aureoles had tweeted that criminals had somehow downed the helicopter, but he later walked that back in an interview with CNN affiliate Televisa, saying that he could not confirm that the aircraft was "taken down, or shot down."

There was one survivor from the accident. That person is said to be in intensive care in a hospital, but it is hoped they can give critical information about the crash to authorities.

The region has been a central location for Mexico's drug war, according to the report, and gun battles between criminal and authorities are fairly common.
