AOPA Expo '04: That's An Extra-Long Trip!

Santa Rosa - Duluth Non-Stop

Extra Aircraft’s EA-500 recently flew a non-stop, seven-hour flight with reserve, performing a feat Extra says is unmatched by aircraft even twice its price.

The EA-500 flew from Santa Rosa (CA) to Duluth (MN) -- a 1,500 nautical miles nonstop trip. On board: two people, bags, tools, and show displays. As most aircraft in the single-engine turboprop high-performance cabin class are capable of flying a similar non-stop flight at 1,000 nautical miles, the EA-500 has proven to go above and beyond. To achieve a range similar to the EA-500’s in another aircraft, operating costs would double. The EA-500 consumed an average of 20.4 gallons of fuel per hour during its trip.

"The trip further confirms that the EA-500 (file photo of type, above) is an exceptionally flexible aircraft," said Ken Keith, CEO of Extra Aircraft. "It is the only aircraft in its class and beyond capable of achieving this degree of operating efficiency."

A six-seat, touring aircraft, the EASA-certified Extra EA-500 was specifically designed to utilize the Rolls-Royce 250-B17F/2 turboprop engine. The efficiency of the engine and its lightweight design, weighing only 205 pounds and with a power output of 450 SHP, gives the aircraft the flexibility to fly at wind friendly without sacrificing fuel consumption. The aircraft will also feature Honeywell’s APEX® fully integrated cockpit as the standard avionics package for the EA-500, beginning in 2006.
