Source Of SpaceX Launch Pad Explosion Is Puzzling For The Company

Musk: 'Most Difficult And Complex Failure We Have Had In 14 Years'

SpaceX founder Elon Musk is calling the recent failure of a Falcon 9 rocket on the launch pad "the most difficult and complex failure we have ever had in 14 years."

Geekwire reports that Musk made that comment, and others about the explosion that destroyed the booster and its satellite payload, on Twitter late last week. He said that it is "(i)mportant to note that this happened during a routine filling operation. Engines were not on and there was no apparent heat source."

In another Tweet, Musk says that "(p)articularly trying to understand the quieter bang sound a few seconds before the fireball goes off. May come from rocket or something else."

Musk has asked anyone who has video or still images of the rocket prior to the explosion to send him those images to help them in their investigation. He said something may have impacted the rocket as it was being fueled.
