Aero-TV At DSAS21: iFlyGPS Boasts Exceptional Ease Of Use

Designed As A Navigation Tool With A Lot Of Effort On Usability In The Cockpit

During a brief pause at the DeLand Sport Aviation Showcase, iFlyGPS President Walter Boyd goes over some of the latest and greatest of his company’s electronic flight bag app with Aero News Editor-in-Chief, Jim Campbell. His company has a decidedly stark focus on general aviators, a refreshing change of pace in a market that’s increasingly focused on courting larger carriers. iFLYGPS strives to be the general aviation pilot’s EFB system, with an emphasis on rough and ready flow, large fonts, and affordable subscription fees.

“Our Primary differentiator is ease of use in the cockpit,” said Boyd. “The other guys [have] a good app, but they designed it as a flight planning tool, and you can see that. It works great on your desk, but when you get in the cockpit, when you’re bouncing around, when there’s a lot of sunlight, those little buttons and tiny fonts can be real hard to use. We’ve taken the other direction, ours is designed as a navigation tool with a lot of effort on usability in the cockpit.”

Boyd reveals that some large scale upgrades have been slated for rollout under their upcoming iFLYEFB app, owing to the level of comfort users have built up with the initial app experience. Pilots have a knack for building lasting, streamlined procedures in the cockpit, and there’s no surer way to throw a wrench into the works than to “improve” the app by rearranging the functions in the name of appearance. Customers will be able to choose from the legacy app, with many of the same features, or from the updated EFB competitor geared towards competing with the largest corporate offerings.
