Flight Design To Establish Presence In Newport, VT

Will Assemble And Ship CTLS Airplanes At Newport State Airport

The governor of Vermont, along with the owner of the Jay Peak resort in Newport, VT held a news conference Thursday to announce that Flight Design will be assembling and shipping its CTLS LSAs at Newport State Airport (KEFK) in a region known locally as the Northeast Kingdom.

The announcement is just one aspect of an overall airport revitalization plan that includes six new hangars, a runway expansion, and a new terminal building at the airport. The overall project carries a $20 million price tag.

The officials said Flight Design also plans to open a flight school at the airport with three of the LSAs, according to a report from television station WCAX in Burlington, VT.  They said the goal is to encourage people to plan a Vermont vacation in which they can also learn to fly.

"This is about jobs and job creation, so we can ... make sure kids in the Kingdom can find jobs in the Kingdom," said Governor Peter Shumlin (D).

The airport is waiting for approval from the FAA for the runway expansion project.
