ANN CEO and Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell took some time at the AOPA Aviation Summit 2013 to check out some light sport aircraft. In this video, Jim takes a look at a slick little job produced by Arion Aircraft. Mark Stauffer, the Operations Manager at Arion Aircraft introduced Jim to the Arion Lightning.
The all composite Arion Lightning started out as a kit airplane in 2006. The airplane was designed from the ground up around the Jabiru engine and is manufactured in the United States. As the market indicated that fully manufactured light sport aircraft were in demand, Arion obtained ASTM compliance and the Lightning became a certified S-LSA.
Arion produces the airplane as a kit or as an S-LSA. The kit version is very complete and is set up for the Jabiru engine firewall forward installation. The aircraft key critical components are pre-manufactured at the factory.
The video goes on to explain the costs of the kit plane and compares those costs to the factory built S-LSA version. Whether its kit built or factory built, you end up with a roomy 2-place airplane that bumps the edge of the 120 knot LSA cruise limit.
